Twelve Years a Slave (by Solomon Northup ; edited by Sue Eakin and Joseph Logsdon)

Twelve Years a Slave - Solomon Northup

I read this book last year, and it is without a doubt one of the best, most moving books I have ever read, and absolutely the best book that I have ever read about slavery in the United States.  I remember crying on the bus as I read parts of this book (well, really one completely gut wrenching part in particular), and I just think it is an absolute shame that this book is not required reading in every high school in the United States.  I am thrilled that this book has been turned into a movie because I know that is probably the only way this soul altering story will ever even be so much as a blip on most people's radar, and the lives and stories of the people in this book should not be forgotten by any American.

Northup's account of his experience as a slave presented sides of that institution that I had never heard of before. The emotion in this book was real and raw, his ability to make the reader feel like he was standing right beside Northup throughout all of his travails was remarkable. I can't heap enough praise upon this book, and I don't have words adequate enough to do so. It's a phenomenal book and deserves to be read by everyone.
