This book should be required reading for every high school U.S. history course. Absolutely
the best book I've ever read about slavery in the United States!
Northup's account of his experience as a slave presented sides of that institution that I had never heard of before. The emotion in this book was real and raw, his ability to make the reader feel like he was standing right beside Northup throughout all of his travails was remarkable. I can't heap enough praise upon this book, and I don't have words adequate enough to do so. It's a phenomenal book and deserves to be read by everyone.
