My niece just grooves on this Pete the Cat book. She likes the song Pete sings, and she likes the repetition of the phrases in the story. It's a great book for young pre-school to early elementary aged kids. At nine years old my niece is probably a little older than this book's target audience, but whatever--she likes it.
My nephew and I had a much more difficult time enjoying this story, though, because my niece has heard the audiobook version, and she was bent on making sure that our reading duplicated what she heard on the CD. It's just very difficult to read and enjoy a story when you have to cope with a director's vision of how the narrative should be told. Still, that is a testament to how great audio narration can help get kids excited about reading.
